    Magento is arguably the most popular and high-performance eCommerce software available today, offering a highly customisable and scalable platform on which to build your online business.

    Magento recently announced that they have extended the support period of Magento 1 versions until June 2020, as so many customers were not prepared to begin the upgrade to Magento 2. Crucially though, this support does not extend to any third-party integrations or security tools, many of which are not compatible with the latest Magento upgrade.

  7. Google+ Is Shutting Down

    Google are shutting down Google+ for consumers due to thousands of accounts having their data exposed to third parties.

    News has come out of Google that they will be closing down the consumer side of Google+ over the next 10 months. The closure is coming about due to around 500,000 users having their data exposed to third parties without being made aware.Google+

    According to sources from the Wall Street Journal the company have know about the issue since March but decided not to disclose this information till now:

    They opted not to disclose the issue this past spring, in part because of fears that doing so would draw regulatory scrutiny and cause reputational damage”.

    Google have since defended the decision not to disclose the leak till now, writing in their blog: “Whenever user data may have been affected, we go beyond our legal requirements and apply several criteria focused on our users in determining whether to provide notice.”

    They eventually decided to disclose the information on the back of a review from their Privacy & Data Protection Office. The review found that they couldn’t accurately identify those users affected, establish if there was any evidence of misuse or if there was any actions a developer/user could take in response to their data being leaked.

    In light of these issues concerning their ability to maintain the security levels of data on the platform coupled with ‘very low’ usage, the consumers version of Google+ will be no more come August 2019.

    Google+ The Not So Social Network

    Google+ launched in 2011 was set up to rival Facebook and Twitter it promised to offer a different experience letting you connect and build relationships with like-minded users who have the same passion as you. Although a nice idea at the start the consumer usage of the platform has continued to fall with figures coming out of Monday’s report that “The consumer version of Google+ currently has low usage and engagement: 90% of Google+ user sessions are less than five seconds.”

    What does this mean for Google+ for businesses?

    Google has said that it will continue to offer Google+ powered networks for businesses currently using the platform. It could be good news for enterprises who currently use the platform as google announced a change in focus and direction of the platform “We’ve decided to focus on our enterprise efforts and will be launching new features purpose-built for businesses.” with more information due soon.

    We have recently received the following notice from Google regarding a Google reCAPTCHA update. As of March 31st 2018, Google will be turning reCAPTCHA v1 off on all websites that still use it and have not updated or changed.

    What is Google reCAPTCHA?

    reCAPTCHA is a service from Google that helps protect websites from spam and abuse. A “CAPTCHA” (Completely Automated Public Turing Test To Tell Computers and Humans Apart) is a test check to see if a human or a “bot” is filling in a form. It is easy for humans to solve, but hard for “bots” and other malicious software to figure out. It usually takes the form of squiggly letters or numbers that are quite hard to read.

    How do I know if I am using version one?

If you do not know or are unsure whether your website is currently using version one of reCAPTCHA and would like to know whether you will be affected we can check this for you and inform you.     GDPR Introduction

    If you use the internet, General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will affect you! On the 18th May 2018, the new GDPR will come into force. AsOne have written a ‘snapshot’ guide to help you get ready.


    First things first, you may be thinking that it won’t affect UK businesses after Brexit, however, the current interpretation covers any company anywhere where the data of an EU citizen is stored. Not only that but the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has indicated that this regulation will be adopted into UK legislation pre-Brexit since it comes into force before the Brexit date.

    The regulation text is long, very long. We have listed below the main takeaway points you should consider to help you make progress towards compliance before the deadline. Of course it goes without saying that this does not replace professional legal advice.

    A lot of talk centres on the possibility of huge fines. This is being used by so called GDPR experts to scare businesses into buying software or policies to guarantee compliance. Don’t fall for it. Compliance is not solved with a piece of software, policies or some new terms and conditions. Compliance is an ongoing process and since the regulation is still quite vague in certain areas nobody can claim to be an expert. Much like the scaremongering that followed the EU Cookie Law, fines are unlikely unless you are not making progress towards compliance or ignore official warnings and recommendations.

    Eight Points to Consider


    The GDPR covers personal data or data that could be linked to personally identifiable data. This includes your customers (of course) but don’t forget your suppliers and your staff. They are all covered by the GDPR. Current thinking is that B2B data is treated no differently if it contains personally identifiable data. For example info@business.com is not personally identifiable but john.smith@business.com is personally identifiable.


    No longer will it be acceptable to ask users to opt out of sharing data or receiving marketing information. The regulation is clear that all processing of data must have explicit consent. As a rule of thumb if the data you hold has not been given to you with a clear consent to it being processed you shouldn’t process it.


    It is assumed that transactional data processing such as sending out receipts for purchases will be exempt, however the advice is to get users to opt-in anyway. Many websites already won’t let you proceed unless you agree to their terms and this may extend to opting into having your data processed too.


    Anyone whose data you hold will have a right to access it within 30-days of their request. There will no longer be a provision to charge for this data request. Of course if your customers data is available via a public login (e.g. a ‘my account’ section on an eCommerce site) then they already have access with your assistance, however if you hold data elsewhere (e.g. accounts package) and the user does not have access, then you will have to comply with the request within 30 days.


    If you hold data on any person they will have the right to be ‘forgotten’. The right to erasure does not provide an absolute ‘right to be forgotten’. Individuals have a right to have personal data erased and to prevent processing only in specific circumstances typically when there is no compelling reason for its continued processing. If you have legal obligations to store data this should supersede the user’s request to erase their data, but may affect your ability to continue to use or process it.


    A Data Protection Officer (DPO) should be appointed if your organisation is large, a public authority, collecting mass data or CCTV monitoring. Unfortunately there is no guidance on what constitutes a “large” organisation. For most SMEs no DPO will be required, however, somebody in your organisation will still need to be responsible for GDPR compliance. If you do need a DPO then that person cannot be conflicted. They can’t, for example, be head of IT or be responsible for any of the data assets.


    Do you have third parties processing data for you? You probably do if you have a website, use online software or outsource any of your data processing requirements. You might also be the third party, processing data for other organisations. The GDPR will extend to those persons processing data not just the controllers (owners) of the data. It is vital if you are the controller that you put in place contracts with clauses that detail how a third party can process data on your behalf. It is the controller’s responsibility to put these process in place. Since AsOne host 100’s of websites, we will be contacting all our clients to remind them to ensure they draft contracts to protect themselves.


    Are you protected? Is your website and data secure? Is your data encrypted? Has your site got an SSL certificate? When the GDPR comes into force any data breach must be reported to the ICO within 72-hours of you becoming aware. Of all the regulations it will probably be this one that lands you in hot water if you are not compliant. The GDPR is not designed to enforce security measures it’s all about how you deal with data. That being said, if your data is secure then the possibility of a breach is minimised and you are less likely to fall foul of the GDPR.


    There is an easy win that will reduce your workload and help with your compliance. Data is not limited to digital media, GDPR covers paper documents and any other forms of data storage.

    Quite simply, if you are holding data that you don’t need, are not legally required to keep or don’t intend to use, delete it. If you haven’t got it you don’t have to worry if your process is compliant.

    Demonstrating Compliance

    It’s all about demonstrating compliance or progress towards it. So to help you we have created a checklist to get you started. “Get you started” is an important phrase, as mentioned previously GDPR is an ongoing process and it is likely to continue to evolve in the short and long term.


    Make a list of all the locations where you store personal data. That includes the boxes in the store room, your eMail accounts, websites, CRM system and much more. Remember this is for personal data, it doesn’t matter if it is for a customer, supplier or employee. A simple spreadsheet will do, record the following information:

    • Name of the Asset
    • Location
    • Owner (who is responsible for it in your organisation)
    • Processor (who is processing the data, is it a 3rd party)
    • Shared (Is the data shared and who)
    • Does it contain Personally Identifiable Information?
    • What format is it in (digital, paper, etc.)
    • Retention (any legal obligations to retain data, how long will it be kept)
    • Risks (what risks to the data can you foresee)


    Once you identify your data assets you can now assess them.

    • Describe the information flows. How is data recorded, stored and processed?
    • Identify the privacy and related risks. How could data be compromised?
    • Identify and evaluate the privacy solutions. How can you protect the data?
    • Sign off and record the PIA outcomes
    • Integrate the outcomes into the project plan by your organisation’s heads.
    • Consult with internal and external stakeholders as needed throughout the process


    Once you have identified the data, the risks and how you can mitigate them implement policies and procedures to act on that information and further reduce risks. Ensure you have a process in place to cover how your organisation responds to data requests and data breaches. Most importantly you need to schedule regular reviews of your policies and procedures.


    None of this makes any difference if your employees and third parties don’t know about it. An important part of your procedure is to ensure your employees and third parties are clear about their roles and responsibilities.


    The main takeaway is to ensure you start this process soon. Again, the emphasis is on “start”, it is unlikely that most organisations will ever be “finished”. The most important thing you can do is identify what data you hold and start from there.

For those of you who haven’t heard of this event before, the SpeaK autumn ball is a charity event which supports the mental health charity Manchester Mind. Their goal is to help Mind work towards changing people’s attitudes towards mental health, ensuring there is a support network for those who are suffering in silence. The event was founded by Olivia Cain, Andrew Collins and Natalie Littlewood after the tragic loss of Olivia’s father and a close friend to Andrew and Natalie. Charity events such as this emphasise a positive way to move forward, raise awareness and establish a support system for family and friends of those who have lost loved ones.

    How are AsOne are helping to raise the profile of the charity events?

    As part of our support we ensured that the SpeaK Autumn Ball benefitted from our business expertise by developing a new webpage that would suit their needs in the most efficient way.     With 158 million people using the Snapchat App daily it’s become part of everyday life. It lets you send quick photos and videos to your friends, letting them know what it is you’re getting up to in real time. There’s even a ‘filters’ feature which lets you apply a variety of digital lenses to your face, allowing you try on a flower crown, or become a puppy. All of these features make Snapchat a fun way to interact with other people, making it easy to understand why it’s adored by people around the world.

    Now Snapchat’s newest feature, the Snapchat map, is making headlines this week by allowing you to see where your friends are and what they’re doing. The feature also allows you to see a variety of ‘stories’ that are being shared from everyday or event profiles from all around the world. You’re represented by a cartoon avatar which you can customise to look like you on an app called Bitmoji. Your cartoon self can then use the location services on your phone to estimate what activity you are currently doing by monitoring travel speed, and phone useage. For example, if you’ve not been using your phone for a few hours at night, then the app will change your cartoon avatar to represent you sleeping.

     So what’s the problem?

    Whilst watching your cartoon version of you and your friends interact in real time on a map can be an indulgement to the curiosity, it can reveal things such as when your house is vacant, or where you’ve left your car. Additionally for younger, more naїve users who may not be aware of the new features sinister connotations, they may not be aware of the dangers of broadcasting their exact location to the relative strangers in their contacts list. As this is an ‘opt-out’ service, some people may not even be aware that the app is accessing this information.

    So what can you do about it?

    Don’t worry! You can do something about it. Snapchat allows a user to go into ‘ghost mode’ which allows you to completely remove your cartoon avatar from the snapchat map. Or, if you prefer, you can select which friends are able to see where you are rather than publicising your location to everyone.

    Cyber security is becoming increasingly more important for all websites due to continual cyber attacks. As technological advances create more scope for cyber attacks there is an increasing need to ensure you are fully compliant with industry standards and are actively protecting yourself.

    Only recently we have experienced a mass attack on our NHS, granted this was not the sole target however it does highlight the need for greater cyber security controls. This is a worldwide issue and one that is a constant battle to ensure you are safe & secure online.

    The ransomware attack, called Wana Decrypt0r 2.0, locks users out of their devices and data, encrypting all data and demanding a ransom for the decryption key via the Tor Network.  This malware is allegedly utilising the ‘EternalBlue’ exploit discovered by the NSA which has recently been leaked by a group of hackers known as ‘The Shadow Brokers’.   

    This malware appears to take advantage of the SMB (Server Message Block) protocol which is utilised heavily within the Microsoft operating system with an exploit to gain remote system access.  The malware isn’t currently known to be distributed via email, however, this is a very likely candidate for further exposure and spread of the malware.

    A patch for security was released in March for Windows 2012-16 however if your operating system is older than 2012, you are still vulnerable to attack. Microsoft has already stepped in and released a patch for older operating systems. Please ensure that your security and software are updated to the latest version as this will give you an extra layer of protection.

    The spread of malware is prolific via email. Always be vigilant with emails that you open, especially if they contain attachments.

    Google is leading an initiative to make the web a more secure environment by not only encouraging all websites to use HTTPS but by marking standard HTTP websites as “Not Secure”.  With Google being the most popular Search Engine and Internet Browser it is important to take their advice seriously and other popular browsers such as Firefox are now starting to follow suit.

    What are HTTP and HTTPS?

    HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol) is the standard way of exchanging information on the Internet. It is the protocol that is used to allow you to connect to a website server to request and send data across the web. However, over standard HTTP connections this data can be intercepted or modified by what is known as Man-in-the-middle attacks, where someone is able to access your data as it transfers from your device to the web server. Essentially eavesdropping on any information you are passing across by entering it on an insecure website including your name, address, passwords and credit card information.

    HTTPS (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure) provides a secure way to exchange data with a web server without the risk of this data being intercepted or modified. It achieves this by encrypting the connection made between your device and the website server, locking out anyone who tries to access this information from another location or device.

    HTTPS is enabled by using an SSL certificate on your website, for more information, read our blog “The benefits of an SSL certificate”. 

    How will this affect my website?

    Recent releases of the Chrome and Firefox browsers have started to label websites that collect personal information such as passwords or credit card details with a Not secure notice like the examples below.

    This is the first phase of the plan to encourage websites to move towards using the secure connection of HTTPS, as time goes on the warnings will become more prominent and harder to ignore. Eventually web browsers may show all HTTP pages as Non Secure and the warnings will be more severe:

    Future Chrome releases will display the following warnings on any http page:

    Future Firefox releases will show the following message when a user clicks a username or password field on a page that does not use HTTPS:

    These warnings will also appear on your platform login page, if you are using WordPress or Magento, for example, these warnings will show on your /wp-admin and /admin pages respectively. While this will not affect your website’s visitors it is a stark reminder that your login details are being entered insecurely and could be intercepted by hackers.

    How will this affect my visitors?

    As you can imagine these insecure warnings may lead to confusion and a lack of trust between your customers and your website. Seeing these warnings particularly on eCommerce websites may well discourage your customers from entering personal information on your website. Even if you do not take payments on your website, any website that requires your customers to log in to their account will display these messages.

    Future versions of web browsers may display any HTTP page as Not Secure regardless of the information they collect as they push for every website to use HTTPS.

    What should I do?

    With Cybercrime on the rise and the leading web browsers advising the use of HTTPS to secure your website, there has never been a more important time to protect your website and your visitors with an SSL certificate. Having an SSL certificate on your website provides many benefits as well as the security your website will perform faster and may appear higher in search engine rankings by providing a secure connection.

    Today is National Tell a Story Day! We asked several of our team members to come up with their very own stories for National Tell a Story Day. These were the tales that our team members had to tell:

    Richard’s Story – Are you joking?!

    There was once a girl named Lauren, who started life as a peasant girl in rural Clayton. Life was hard for Lauren and she spent her days farming the land & dreaming of a better life where she could run free without all of the hardship.

    One day, on a cold December morning a magical machine appeared with all of its bright lights flashing. From inside the Machine appeared a man called Daniel who said, “Lauren if you want to escape this hard life come with me and enjoy a life on the road”. Lauren was so mesmerised by Daniel the trucker she got straight in and waved goodbye to her life in Clayton. Daniel & Lauren travelled for many days and nights until they arrived in Hastings where Daniel lived. Upon seeing Hastings for the first time, Lauren was excited for her new life and eager for it to start.

    After a few days, Daniel & Lauren went into the town to do some shopping. To Lauren’s horror, Daniel left her abandoned there, screaming “ARE YOU JOKING!”, she would never see him again. Alone & distraught Lauren wondered what she would do and after a few nights of sleeping rough, she decided that she must go home to Clayton. Lauren went to the local council office and begged them for help. They put her on the first train back to Manchester & her heart was lifted.

    Upon seeing Clayton, Lauren was so emotional to be home that she broke down and stated that she had never been happier. Lauren went back to her shack and started the process of rebuilding her life. However, while she was gone, the shack she called home had been torn down by the council and she actually had nowhere to live. Deciding that her life is going to change, Lauren found a new house and converted her attic to a painter’s studio where she now works with pink bobbles in her hair. Best of all, her new neighbour and Spirit brother “Sherri-joe” took Lauren under his wing and showed her how to make the most of her new life.
    Sherri-joe & Lauren now have their very own shack together on the original land Lauren used to work all those years ago now wearing those pink bobbles while raising her quails. Daniel, on the other hand, can be found at a truck stop near you, just don’t get into his van as this only leads to broken promises.

    Laurens Story – I shouldn’t have eaten that – The life of Richard de’Lioncourt

    There was once a small boy called Richard. Richard fantasised of the day that he could venture out into the big open world and follow his dreams of becoming a supermodel. However, Richards mother Kim was very strict and did not like the idea of Richard becoming a supermodel, instead Kim wanted Richard to follow in his brother Daniel’s footsteps and become a truck driver – Kim thought this was more realistic and would guarantee food on the table each week.

    This was the last thing Richard wanted to do. So instead, Richard set out a plan to fulfil his dream and become the next Naomi Campbell. Richard had the looks, personality and charisma to succeed in the industry but how would he even get started?

    Richard had an ‘acquaintance’ called Lauren who he knew could help him be in the right place at the right time and with the right people. All he would have to do then is make himself known and remembered. What everyone seemed to forget though was Richard was an elaborate individual, who could command the presence of a room in an instance.

    Lauren arranged for the pair of them to go to an event at Rhodes studio in Manchester. The event was going to be filled with numerous stars and industry professionals looking for the next ‘big thing’. Could this be Richard De’Lioncourt?

    The pair arrived in their best attire – Lauren in a beautiful couture dress and Richard wearing what could only be described as a Balenciaga dream. All eyes were on Richard.

    The first person to make contact was global megastar Madam Rhodes herself! Richard found himself engaging in light conversation and ‘banter’ with the star.

    But what happened next could only be described as.. well… commanding the presence that was needed.

    At AsOne we enjoy getting involved with seasonal holidays by doing some fun office activities that help to wake our office up early in the morning! This weeks activities brought out the creative side of our team. We took our team members back to school with some creative Easter activities!

    Our first activity which we took part in was creating an Easter inspired design using the available decoration tools. All of this had to be done in under 5 minutes, so the pressure was on to create something spectacular!

    We were impressed with our team’s  imagination even if the finishing product was very questionable!

    Our winners were Sherridan Rhodes and Richard O’Brien! They won an Easter egg for their efforts!

    Fun office activities

    Our second activity of the week was an egg decorating contest just like the ones that used to be held in school. The task was simple, we had 5 minutes to decorate an egg and whoever was chosen as the best won!

    It was up to director Tracey Rush to decide the winner. This is what she had to say about each egg –

    Richard’s Egg Basket – ‘The chicks with the basket are very cute and represent a true traditional easter image.’

    Lauren’s Mr Bump – ‘I love Mr. bump, it’s very obvious who he was even without the nameplate.’

    Sam’s Mr. Googly Eyes – ‘Mr googly eyes are charming but his nose and mouth could have had more work.’

    Joel’s Ninja Egg – ‘Same goes for the black ninja, his eyes were the focal point so could have been more emotive.’

    Alex’s Spiderman – ‘Spiderman was really well done too but if I have to be critical I have to say the eye smudge let him down a little.’

    Sherridan’s Tree Eared Creature – ‘But my winner is The little green eared creature because it’s got a real docile expression that is almost cute and it’s nothing I can relate it to. It’s completely out of someone’s imagination and yet so simply put together.’

    So there you have it Sherridan’s green eared creature won!

    It was great to get our team into the Easter spirit with these simple but fun office activities.

    Our huddles also give a chance for staff to share what work they have on for the day, allowing them to alert everyone as to what they will be up to. It also gives the chance to brainstorm ideas if someone finds themselves having a mental block. A fresh insight can help to improve your work and productivity.

    One of the ways that we keep our own team motivated is through our morning huddles. Each week a different team member is chosen to present a motivational activity in the morning. These have ranged from quizzes to treasure hunts. The purpose of this is to help wake our team up in the morning and get them active. Activities like these can help to bring out the competitiveness of your team helping to motivate them early in the morning. It helps to get us all talking and shake the cobwebs of the morning away.

    Appreciate your team

    One of the easiest ways to motivate your team is to simply let them know that you appreciate the hard work that they put in. If they achieve a goal, make sure that it is recognised whether that is privately or publicly. This can be a great motivator and help to increase individual productivity. This will help to make your team members feel like a valued part of the team and create a positive company culture.

    Support new ideas

    For many people it can be difficult to open up and share their ideas. So when your employees share ideas make sure that you support the act of bringing ideas forward. Even if the idea is something which you can not do, it is great to encourage your team to put forward their thoughts. Your team members will feel more encouraged to present future ideas.

    Keep it fun

    Work doesn’t always have to feel like hard work. It’s great being productive and making sure that you get your work done but many people can become blinkered if they don’t step away from their desk. A pop of colour, a few images and an open space can work wonders for your team’s mental productivity.

  82. AsOne Served a Helping of Humble Pie for Red Nose day

    At AsOne we always strive to do our part for charity and help people from around the world who do not have the same start in life as we do. This year we decided to get involved with Red Nose Day on the 24th of March.

    We didn’t however, want to just do something simple we wanted to make sure that all of our team members were involved and something which people would definitely want to donate for. That’s when we came up with AsOne’s Pie to the Face. We gave people the opportunity to see one of our team members have delicious pies thrown at them by other team members. We knew that many could not pass up the chance to see one of us get pied!

    The rules were simple, people voted for who they wanted to see get a pie in the face by donating to our funding page. £1 was equivalent to 1 vote so the more people donated the more votes the chosen team member received.

    After nearly 3 weeks of voting and raising an amazing £261, our eventual winner was Richard O’Brien! He took the serving of humble pie with a smile on his face!

    We even had a guest pie thrower! Diane from The Rubbish Removers came along to our event to help us with throwing the pies. (We think she enjoyed it a bit too much!)

    You may have read in the news recently the government is investing almost £2 billion into fighting cyber-crime due to a surge in fraud, website hacking and other online crimes. It has been reported that up to 30,000 websites are hacked per day worldwide. With cyber-crime on the rise it is more important than ever to make sure your website, data and customers are protected from hackers.

    You service your car and update your phone; your website requires attention too.

    Why target WordPress?

    With WordPress being the most popular Content Management System and powering over 25% of all websites it is a natural target for hackers due to its sheer popularity.

    The core WordPress system is, in fact, a very secure platform and there are a number of “white hat” developers constantly looking for vulnerabilities in the system so they can be patched up. If a security loophole is discovered it is passed to the WordPress development team and will be fixed in a WordPress version release. This makes it vital to keep your WordPress platform up to date to ensure the latest security patches have been applied.

    On occasion there can also be vulnerabilities in a WordPress theme or plugin that can allow hackers backdoor access into your website. Again these vulnerabilities will be patched in future version releases and should be kept up to date.

    How do hackers gain access to my site?

    There are various ways a hacker could try to gain access to your website such as a brute force attack where the hacker or a bot will attempt to guess your username and password thousands and thousands of times. Since around November 2016 there has been a spike in these types of attacks mainly from Russian/Ukraine IP addresses.

    A brute force attack is an unsophisticated method of guessing your credentials up to millions of times a day, this can not only affect your website security but performance as every time a login is attempted it takes up resources to process the attempt.

    If your WordPress site, themes or plugins are out of date they may contain vulnerabilities that allow hackers into your site.

    What happens if my website is hacked?

    Once a hacker has access to your site there are a number of nasty things they can do including:

    • Upload hundreds of malicious files to send out spam emails.
    • Gain access to your website data including mailing lists, payment details and more. They can choose to steal, edit or delete this data at will.
    • Add posts/pages onto your site that contain spam links, malicious code or redirects your users to another website.
    • Use your site as a platform to infect your visitor’s machines with malware, key trackers, ransomware, viruses or other malicious software in order to capture information they can use for their own gain
    • Add themselves as a WordPress user with full access and lock every other account out

    If a search engine such as Google or Bing detects that your site contains malicious code, it may blacklist it and your site will contain the following warning to visitors:

    While this will massively put users off visiting your site it can also affect your search engine rankings if the problem is not addressed quickly.

    What can I do to prevent against attacks?

    Common usernames and weak passwords make life easy for hackers attempting to guess your details. You should never use an obvious username such as “admin” or “user” as this will hugely increase your chances of being hacked as these are common usernames that hackers will look for. Furthermore, it goes without saying that using a weak password such as “Password” or “password123” will make it very easy for your website to be hacked.

We also install Wordfence the leading WordPress security plugin when each site is launched, however without keeping this and your other WordPress plugins and themes updated your site will not be fully protected.

    After the success of the Digital Skills Festival and meeting some amazing young talent we held an assessment day at our offices on the 14th of March. The day gave us a chance to look for young Manchester talent to offer the opportunity of a work placement over the Summer with AsOne & our team.

    We shortlisted a group of candidates who expressed keen interest within Digital industry who were interested in sectors such as marketing, copywriting, web design, graphic design and much more. They also showed enthusiasm with working with our company AsOne because of the diverse clients we work with. Giving them the opportunity to fully immerse themselves within many different areas of the digital industry.

  90. Helping Tomorrow’s Talent Prepare for Employment

    February proved to be a busy month for AsOne in terms of supporting the local community.  Tracey Rush represented digital industries, alongside other companies and sectors in and around the borough, by attending Alder Community High School to help the students learn more about youth employment.

    Tracey helped students prepare for employment by hosting mock interviews. Each student having completed a job application form would be interviewed to assimilate a real live opportunity, followed by a critique of how the interview went and what considerations could be given to improve an application. This allowed students to experience first hand what a real job application & interview would be like and helped them learn from the experience, taking valuable comments, advice and ideas away that might increase their success rate in the future.

    The aim of this day was to build students confidence when considering applying for a job whether that be part time or full time. This was a skill which many students of Alder felt that they were lacking and made the prospect of going out and getting a job a more daunting task.

    The contribution from director Tracey Rush and the other volunteers on the day has helped to build the confidence of those who participated and many hope to use the experience to aid them in finding jobs over the summer.

    Tracey adds, “I have two boys of my own, 14 & 18, very different personalities and I am sure both would have found the day a challenge to say the least. The students of Alder Community High School did a fantastic job of keeping calm under the pressure. It is unrealistic to assume every individual, youth or not, is able to represent themselves to their best ability when put into such an environment. Having activities around careers and preparation for careers within schools will definitely better support youth employment by preparing young people and encouraging them to be more proactive in their approach for employment”.

    AsOne will be looking forward to further helping support & educate the next generation in youth employment and the options that are open to them after education.

    The Digital Skills Festival landed in Manchester last week and AsOne Creative Digital Marketing were proud attendees of the event. The Digital Skills Festival, is an annual, four-day event that includes a skills conference; the largest digital careers fair in the UK and opportunities for young people in education to progress into a rewarding career in the digital industry.

    The event organisers Manchester Digital outline the purpose of the event. “Manchester has an ambition to become a digital city and in order to achieve this we need a highly skilled digital workforce that is big enough to serve the needs of an ever-growing industry. We need a pipeline of talent that will leave school, college and university with industry standard, work ready, digital skillsets.”

With our attendance at the Digital Skills Festival we wanted the opportunity to showcase our unique value proposition and how we can further develop the careers of the next generation.     Every teenager at the end of High School will face the daunting task of choosing whether to continue with education or to go into the working world. It is not an easy choice to be made with many teenagers not having first hand experience of what a working life would entail for them. Many pupils are not fully aware of the options that are presented to them at the end of high school. However with a full understanding of the avenues open to young people they can make an objective decision on the course of their life which can include further education, vocational training or entering the workforce.

    AsOne will be attending Alder Community High School on the 8th of February to help young people comprehend what life can be like outside of full time education. The concept is to help them understand the options that are available to them when their time at high school ends.

    The students of Alder Community High School will sit a mock interview with the Director of AsOne, Tracey Rush. This will allow students to experience first hand what they can expect from an interview in a practical setting. This will help with their personal development and confidence when preparing themselves for both workplace interviews and for those which may be a necessity for college and university. Having an understanding of what to take to an interview or the questions which may be asked can help to alleviate pressure that many face when undertaking an interview for the first time. The interview will reflect the real life expectations of employers, helping pupils to develop the life skills that they will need when applying for their chosen careers.

    When a student is preparing to leave school, they are told of all the way that college would benefit them. However, they are not fully informed in the ways in which an apprenticeship could be the best foot forward for their chosen careers.

    The End the Fear  WordPress website is a Greater Manchester based organisation run by the GMP which helps those who are victims of domestic violence. They wanted a website which had the connotation of hope with their use of bright colours. The yellow couch was an idea of End The Fear which generated the hashtag #SittingRightWithYou so those who visited the website knew there was a place for them to go to.

    The site itself was built on a WordPress  website with a bespoke theme and build. End the Fear has an any easy to use navigation, which has been built with a clear intention of being quick due to the subject matter at hand. Those using the navigation will be able to obtain information quickly and clearly. With the clear boxes over the yellow sofa it is a striking visual that people will not fail to notice. They wanted to make sure that no matter who you are or what your level of experience with computers is, that you would be able to easily navigate their website.

    One of the WordPress websites USP’s is that the website is built with your protection in mind. End The Fear has a “Hide this website button’ which sends users to the BBC news web page, leaving no traces of the user being on End The Fear. End The Fear is to support the victims of domestic violence, user safety is a main priority when using the website. This button allows for those who may be in immediate danger or who wish not to raise attention to exit the website in a efficient and discreet manner. This goes along with a ‘Cover your tracks’ button which takes user to a page which holds information on how they can cover their track while they are online.

    The website itself is fully mobile responsive with many customisable features such as the sidebar which the clients can log in to and edit. The website has an integrated newsletter sign up for those who wish to receive news from them.
